Tego jeszcze nie grali.

They haven't played that yet. [English version below.]

Globalizacja! Internet!

Poniżej prezentuję listę kilku wspaniałych, a właśnie mniej popularnych artystów i dorzucam garaść wspomnień.

To naprawdę kojące dźwięki. Zresztą posłuchajcie sami:

To alternatywa? Elektronika?

Artyści koncertowali w całej Europie, wydali dwa oficjalne albumy, a wcześniej jeszcze jeden, EPkę i trzy single. Zdobyli także Fryderyka i paszport "Polityki". Niestety, w 2013 r. zawiesili działalność, ale nadal można posłuchać nagrań. Jak brzmią? Oryginalnie. Charakterystyczny wokal, wyraźnie słyszalna perkusja, czasem duża dynamika, a czasem konieczne spowolnienie. Czy to indie rock? Podobno. Na pewno warto sprawdzić:

Rocka.

To tyle.

ENG:

Globalization! Internet! Other big words! All this meant that some things became widespread, reaching almost everyone. We all listen to the same, admire the same music and hum the same songs, right?

Well, maybe not quite. If you reach somewhere beyond "Toss a coin to your witcher" and other top songs on Spotify and Tidal, you may discover something unobvious. It is worth looking for it, because how long can you listen to the same music? Somewhere there are things known to a smaller audience, and some maybe to almost no one. Below I present a list of some amazing, but not very popular artists and add some memories. This, of course, does not mean that you certainly do not know any of them. Anyway, there is no reason to wait - let's find out. I sorted them according to popularity, i.e. from the largest to the smallest number of Facebook likes and they are not only currently active artists.

Let's get started!

6. Angus & Julia Stone (998 311 likes)

Compared to the other bands mentioned here, this one is quite popular, but for example, among my friends, hardly anyone has heard of it (and if so, possibly from me). Anyway, let's agree: less than a million likes compared with, for example, Metallica's almost 36 million, Justin Bieber's over 76 million or Eminem's 86.5 million is not a lot. Even Kamil Bednarek (almost 1.4 million) and several other Polish artists have more of them.

Here we are talking about siblings from Australia playing indie pop with an admixture of folk. The guitar is of great importance, but other, often not obvious instruments are also in use. In addition to siblings, other musicians also appear on stage, but it is Julia and Angus who are in the spotlight, They both sing (although she does it more often) and also they both play. They've been performing as a band since 2006.

How did I discover this band? Well, I have no idea. This is one of the riddles that I can't solve. However, this is not very important - the main thing is that it happened and I can admire their music. There was a period when they accompanied me almost every day - now a little less often, but I still come back to them very willingly. Almost two years ago I even managed to take part in their first concert in Poland, in Warsaw Stodoła and it was amazing experience!

The band has recorded two EPs, four studio albums (the latest from 2017) and some other releases and it's really worth listening to. As an encouragement, one of my favorite songs performed by them - you can find it above.

5. HVOB (87 760 likes)

In case of this Austrian band I remember quite well how I have heard about it. I noticed that a colleague from work expressed interest in the concert of these artists in Krakow, although we were just on a delegation in Warsaw. I asked what it was, listened to it and since then, although I don't listen to this music regularly, I come back to selected songs from time to time.

As for the band: HVOB stands for Her Voice Over Boys and it is a duo playing electronic music since 2012. Since then, they have released four albums, among other recordings. Their songs are mesmerizing, rhythmic, great for work, but not only. It can help you calm down or relax. These are really soothing sounds. Listen for yourself - you can find an example above.

4. Ocean / OCN (21 997 likes)

This is a Polish rock band that was formed in 2001. It was once called Ocean, then OCN, and now it has not been seen on the music scene for several years. Earlier, its members have been changing dynamically. It is a pity, but sometimes it happens. You can always listen to its music - admittedly, of the seven albums released only four are on Spotify (the second and third as Ocean and the sixth and seventh as OCN), but probably all can be traced on YouTube. Most of the songs are in Polish, but there are also some in English.

People in Poland may associate the band with the relatively popular single "Definicja", recorded with Jamal, which was the Polish version of the band's song called "Waterfall". However, I heard about them because one of my friends was very excited about them when we were in high school - he even managed to support them at one concert with his band at the time. It was then that I heard Ocean / OCN live for the first time and was very impressed with the strong, truly rock sound. You can hear it in many of the band's songs, but they also recorded some tender ballads. For comparison, I posted here two different songs - you can find them above.

3. JÓGA (11,350 likes)

I admit that I expected there would be even fewer likes of this band's Facebook profile and thought that it would be at the bottom of this list, but no and it is a very pleasant surprise. How did I hear about it? I'm not sure, but I think it was like this: September 2014, the birthday of the city of Katowice. I went to listen to The Dumplings, not very well known yet at the time - there were probably about twenty people under the stage. However, before the duo from Zabrze performed, two young guys played on the stage and although I only heard them for a moment, I was delighted. The band was formed in 2013 in Katowice and started as a duo, then for a moment three people belonged to it, and later they returned to their original composition.

It is true that for a year it has not been heard about the JÓGA very much, but it is worth hoping that this will change. Earlier they managed to play a lot of concerts, including at large festivals, win the international Converse Rubber Tracks competition and record two EPs and three singles. Okay, but what is their music like? Beautiful. Touching. Is this an alternative? Electronics? Something like that, but it's hard to say. Nowadays, cataloging music is often pointless. The easiest way will probably be if you listen for yourself - you can find the song "Pod prąd" above. It is in Polish, but the band also has some music in English. You should definitely listen to the song "bones" and also watch the music video - I really encourage you.

2. très.b (8 903 likes)

In the case of this band, I don't have the slightest doubt about how I heard about it - it was thanks to the wonderful Spotify algorithms. The platform added some of its songs to my playlists, and because shortly after that I was going by train to Warsaw for Easter and back, I had a lot of time traveling to listen to this wonderful music.

The band was formed in 2005 as a collaboration of a Polish woman and two musicians of Dutch-American and Danish-English origin. The artists toured all over Europe, released two official albums, and one more before, one EP and three singles. They also won Frederick (Fryderyk - the most prestigious Polish music award) and the Polityka's passport. Unfortunately, in 2013 they suspended their activities, but you can still listen to the recordings. How do they sound? Originally. Characteristic vocals, clearly audible drums, sometimes high dynamics, and sometimes slow down. Is that indie rock? Supposedly. It's definitely worth checking out - above you can find one of my favourite songs of them.

1. Neon (7 295 likes)

I could hear about this Polish rock band, for example, on radio Egida of the University of Silesia or through other, more popular bands, promoting colleagues. The group was founded in 2008 in Wrocław and has released three albums, an EP, several singles and other stuff since then.

What are they playing? Rock. Old, good rock, though maybe a bit in their own way. Alternatively. They play with sound, word and voice. It is also worth listening to their lyrics - maybe they are not the greatest wisdom of the world, but there is a chance that even if they do not reach you with their message, they will at least amuse you. You can find some example above. And besides, Neony can also boast of an excellent cover of Maanaam song. That also can be found above.

That's all. I will be very happy if you like the music of any of the above bands. I would also love to hear your suggestions for less popular music. Keep warm and wear masks. Bye!

Na co komu symbole?

Who the heck needs the symbols? [English version below.]

To zresztą szerszy temat. Mają trafiać do mas, sygnalizować tematy, zwiększać powszechną świadomość. Mogą też być gestem solidarności, wysyłać do przeżywających trudne chwilę wiadomość: „pamiętamy o Was”.

To bzdura.

I ostatnia kwestia: taka akcja to marnotrawstwo produktów użytych do wyprodukowania piwa, pracy ludzi, a nade wszystko pieniędzy protestujących.

W Stanach, w których nierówności społeczne to poważny problem, można by tę odzież przekazać potrzebującym (nawet usuwając z niej logo producenta).

A wy?

ENG:

Recently, I came across such a meme (it says something like: "A whole year without hair removal to fight the injustice that affects women around the world." and "Oh, wow, thanks, what would I do without you."). I looked, read and got a bit irritated. This is because such a meme shows a complete misunderstanding of the idea of symbols. And it is not about this specific action. Maybe it could have been done differently. However, sneering at doing something symbolically is nothing new and I just remembered how bad it pisses me off.

It makes sense - not the first time
There are a lot of examples of common actions aimed at expressing opinions, solidarity with someone or disseminating knowledge about something. The most obvious and probably the easiest one is the putting an appropriate filter on the profile picture on Facebook. This happens after important and frightening events (like the attacks in France in 2015), this is the case during the debate on world-view issues (eg rainbow filters supporting LGBT) and this is also the case when people want to express their patriotism (white-red filters e.g. on the occasion of November 11 - polish Independence Day). Now the filters also appear on the occasion of less important matters - you can, for example, express support for your favorite team during sports competitions this way.

The application of red-white-blue filters for profile pictures after the attacks in France was accompanied by the illumination in these colors of the most iconic buildings and structures in the world. It was supposed to show that the cities and countries in which these objects are located, and therefore also their citizens, tell the French "we are with you". Putting French colors on the Berlin Brandenburg Gate, the Sydney Opera House, the Palace of Culture in Warsaw, the Katowice Spodek or Christ in Rio was to show that the whole world unites in fighting with terrorism.

Another example uniting the world is the Earth Hour. The action, which has been repeating since 2007, consists in switching off lights and electrical devices for one hour every year, on the last Saturday of March, and is to remind about climate change and encourage action against them. This initiative is already operating all over the world, connecting people from different countries and cultures. The action itself does not significantly affect the reduction of energy consumption, and it is also said that it is a burden for the energy system. The latter is indeed a factual argument against this idea and maybe one should think of something else. At the same time this first argument, though true, is improper. After all, the point is not to significantly reduce energy consumption in this way.

This is a wider topic. The accusation often made to such actions is that they do not result in real activity. That these are meaningless gestures that have no visible effect. Only that such an accusation is nonsense, testifying to a complete misunderstanding of the idea of such moves. Filters, backlights, lacks of light and other such activities are not ment to replace actions that really remove the effects of certain events or to prevent them in the future. They are next door. They are supposed to hit the masses, mark some themes, increase public awareness. They can also be a gesture of solidarity, sending the message: "we remember about you" to those who are experiencing a difficult moment.

No reasonable person assumes that such symbols give anything without concrete actions. It's nonsense. Minorities' rights, climate protection and counterterrorism must be largely addressed by the governence. However, their actions are influenced by the opinions of citizens. They determine the priorities or directions of state policy, which is ultimately expressed by the election of the authorities in the general election. The actions that build the common consciousness, various symbols, have ultimately a real, even if not direct, impact on the reality that surrounds us.

Not always adequate
Not every initiative using symbols to lean towards some topic, however, achieves the intended goal. A few years ago in Poland, the action of pouring Ciechan beer took place. It was response to the negative statement about LGBT environments said by the owner of the brewery, Marek Jakubiak. The form of the protest undoubtedly aroused interest, but did not it overshadow the objective? I have the impression that it was more said about the action itself then about its causes. The question is also whether the whole thing did not really bring popularity to the brewery? And the last issue: such an action is a waste of products used to produce beer, people's work, and, above all, protesters' money. After all, the brewery did not lose anything, because the beer has already been sold. Maybe it was possible to conduct the whole action better?

A very similar motif, but a newer one and on a larger scale appeared last year, when people (especially in the USA) began to burn Nike products and publish recordings on which they do so. They were doing this as an expression of opposition to the company establishing cooperation with a footballer who, in turn protesting against racial discrimination, did not stand up when the national anthem was played. And okay, it is about their shoes and clothes, because they paid for them. They can do whatever they want with them. Only that it is a huge mismanagement again. In the United States, where social inequality is a serious problem, these things could be passed on to those in need (even removing the manufacturer's logo). In addition, in this case, the matter concerns such a specific topic that I would not be surprised if the publicity of the matter resulted in increased interest in Nike products among people supporting the footballer. I have my doubts. Burning things you've spent a lot of money on before? Might be better ...

And you? What do you think about this type of action and engaging symbolic actions in the public debate? Let me know if you want. And I leave you with what you may already know, because it's almost 1.5 years old, but it's still a great energetic kick of music. You can find it above.

Take care!
