Zero presji.

No pressure. [English version below.]

To były jedyne kryteria. Nie miały znaczenia różnice programowe (inny język obcy niż dotychczas), brak jakichkolwiek znajomych czy inne kwestie. Nie. Mama zdecydowała i tak musiało być.

Czytałem też inne historie. O rodzicach, wybierających dziecku kierunki studiów mimo absolutnego braku talentu do tych dziedzin.

To kwestia osobistej determinacji.

Posłuchajcie i wy:

To wszystko. Życzę Wam wszystkim dobrego dnia i życia.

I sometimes read various stories on the internet (no, not the page Anonymous Confessions). People write what happened to them. Some stories are probably made up, but some are real. Some are shocking, others outrageous, and others just sad.

I read, for example, about a girl who wanted to go to a vocational school or technical college to learn specific profession, but not, because her mother decided otherwise. At all costs she had to choose a high school - not just any, but in a much larger city, however as close as possible to the railway station. These were the only criteria. The differences in the program (other foreign language than before), lack of any friends or other issues did not matter. No. Mum decided it must have been so.

I also read other stories. About parents choosing fields of study for their children despite their absolute lack of talent in these fields. About parents forcing their descendants to follow them in career, engage in or take over the family business or to realize unfulfilled ambitions of parents.

Every time I thought only one thing: "horrible". I can blame my parents for a few things (not much), but they definitely were not imposing anything on my life choices. They were more involved when choosing the gymnasium, but we were quite unanimous, and when choosing the high school they served only as an advisory body. Before choosing my studies, I totally changed my mind a few times and they did not interfere. They suggested that I could go to another city, but I decided not to. They learned about my decisions related to taking up the job when I took them, but I could still withdraw, so they had a chance to express their opinion. It was similar with the change of university after the bachelor.

In general, they watched, listened and, if necessary, spoke, bringing attention to certain aspects, but the decision was always mine. This is how it should look like. I know that for many of you this is probably obvious, but there is a risk that not for everyone.

Let children make decisions. Sure, advise, express your opinion, but let the final choice be theirs. If they make a mistake - well, that is a pity. Probably the decisions will not affect their entire future, because, come on, the choice of school can have an impact on later studies or work, but it does not have to. It's a matter of personal determination. Let them decide, so they learn as soon as possible that each decision has its consequences. If they are to bear them, let them decide.

Anyway, I am sure that the vast majority of readers of this post do not have children, and those who have them have adult children who already decide about themselves or too small ones to do so. Nevertheless, one day we may be affected by this issue. In addition, this entire post can also be  related to other people close to us. They do not have to be children, but parents, friends, spouses, siblings. Many people we care about. However, we must ensure that the care does not turn into a taking control. That is all.

The song for today is chosen, because I feel like listening to it. You can do it too, if you find it above.

That's all. I wish you all a good day and life.

Słuszny strajk i mądrość memów.

The sensible strike and the wisdom of memes. [English version below.]

Trwa strajk.

To słabe.

To oczywiście w celu zapewnienia niezbędnej obiektywności.

Dobrego wieczoru i tygodnia!

ENG:

There is a strike. The teachers are protesting - the people who give children and young people knowledge, and sometimes also when the parents do not raise them or do not want to do that, deal with their upbringing. Among the postulates of strikers one of the most important is a significant increase in salaries.
I have no doubt that teachers should earn more than they earn and I consider the strike to be the most sensible solution. First of all, teachers in Poland have been earning an alarmingly little for years compared with the responsibility of their work. Secondly, everything gets more expensive, so remuneration must grow. However, teachers' salaries are fixed, so employees of this profession are not able to negotiate individual increases with their superiors. Thirdly, apparently the money is now almost for everyone, so why not for teachers?

Strangely, however, not everyone agrees with me. The amount of content that has appeared on the Internet from nowhere and tries to disgust the teachers' strike is terrifying. I do not think I've ever before had such a feeling of disgrace, browsing, for example, Kwejk. I wonder only what part of these memes was created by students annoyed by the fact that a day or two earlier they got F from mathematics or history or were scolded for speaking in class, and what part is a paid action aimed at discrediting the strike. I do not know and I will not find out. It turns out, however, that even many of my friends are not convinced to the increases. Fortunately, it is generally possible to discuss with them.

There are several arguments against the increases for teachers, built on the principle of "They earn little, but ...". I consider most of them to be nonsense and I will explain why.
  1. "Teachers have a lot of holidays" - yes, teachers are free in a vacation and winter holidays, but not all the time. They have work to do during the part of these breaks. At first they have to close one school year, then prepare for the next one, and in the meantime there are also commision exams, correction exams, etc. Taking into account all of this, teachers still have more holidays than the average person - but they do not have the opportunity to choose the date of it. They can not take advantage of cheaper trips pre- or off-season. They always have free time in the biggest season. It's sad.
  2. "Teachers work only 18 hours a week" - this is obvious nonsense. After all, tests or quizzes do not come up, and then they do not check themselves. Similarly, lessons, additional activities, materials for classes etc. do not prepare themselves. The data quoted in the article on the gazeta.pl portal (in Polish) shows that the real average working time of the teacher is about 40 hours per week. I will not speak about the article itself. The number is important because it shows that the argument about less work is not working at all. However, someone may not believe these studies and say that it should be monitored how many hours teachers work a week. It can be done. It would be enough to assume that teachers should spend 8 hours a day at school. Part of this time would be devoted to conducting lessons, and the rest to the preparation, checking the written works, conducting additional classes, etc. If it turned out that there is not enough time for someone, then the tests would be given to pupils later. If someone in turn had more of time, the headteacher would give him additional tasks. A simple model.
  3. "Teachers are not so poor at all, because they earn on tutoring" - okay, it happens, but it is their completely private matter. If they want to devote their free time to earn more in this way, than that is not our business. I am afraid, however, that it is often not a matter of willingness, but of necessity. Teachers often have to decide for tutoring to keep up financially and it is also sad, not enviable.
  4. "If they do not like it, they can change their job" - well, sh*t, bravo. What a brilliant idea! Let's go this way, let's say that to teachers, physicians, medical rescuers, social workers and many other groups who,  because of a sense of duty work in the state-financed professions, but would like to live with dignity. If all these people once decide to place their private interests over a society that sometimes supports them, and sometimes not, then suddenly we will wake up in a reality in which you have to take care of literally everything on your own. Do you like this idea? Are you confident enough that you can handle everything? I have my doubts ...
All the arguments I mentioned above are really in use. People say these things quite seriously, and in my opinion they are immensely stupid. However, to be fair: there is one thing that I think should go hand in hand with increases of teachers' salaries. It is well illustrated by >>this meme<< (though a bit maliciously). Unfortunately, it is only in Polish. The point is generally that teachers should be reliably accounted for the quality of their work. The point is not to fire an employee with the worst grade, but to maintain a reasonable level of teaching.

During my school education I came across various teachers. Many were mediocre. There were also those who passed knowledge with passion, always knew how to get students' attention and effectively supported their pupils (among them there is, for example, a teacher of Polish who, in a school which is focused almost exclusively on mathematics and physics, made his lessons one of the most anticipated). However, I also met teachers who could not pass on knowledge and those who did not even try. Besides, there were also those who simply behaved scandalously and should never work with young people.

All these people are still working in schools (or at least I guess so). Regardless of which group they belong to, they earn the same amount and if the strike succeed, then everyone will get the same salary increase. And I think that something is probably wrong here. I believe that involvement and quality of work should have an impact on the amount of salary. Teachers should be subject to a periodic strict evaluation, because now some assessment systems are functioning, but the effects can not be seen. I am thinking of a solution in which the opinions of students, parents, other teachers and headteachers would be taken into account. Documentation (tests, written papers, projects implemented by students), reports on the knowledge passed by, additional classes, innovative methods of conducting lessons etc. would also be verified. The results of various examinations obtained by the students of a given teacher would also be checked. Such a system should generally be positive in its nature, that is, first and foremost, to reward teachers who stand above mediocrity. Negative consequences (financial or limiting access to work in the profession) should appear only when the vast majority of components would indicate irregularities in someone's work. After all: the final evaluation of a given teacher could not be carried out by one person, but by a body of independent individuals. This is of course to ensure the necessary objectivity.

Would creating such a system be simple or fast? Probably the answer for both is "no". However, I have no doubt that it is necessary. Without this, the resources for higher remuneration for teachers, which are also necessary, will be at least partly wasted on poor education.

And to get rid of this ambitious theme, the song for today is a mild classic of electronic music. You can find it above.

Have a nice evening and a week!
